It’s the sniffling, sneezing, itching, watering, time of year. We are full on into Allergy Season and they are saying it is one of the worst in years!

We all know that allergies are directly related to MISERY, but did you know that allergies may have some relation to Fibromyalgia? Studies have shown that people who suffer from Fibromyalgia are even more prone to allergies than the general public.

(As if Fibro Warriors didn’t have enough to worry about!)

One of the theories as to why allergies and Fibromyalgia are related is called “Central Sensitization.” An allergic reaction is when your body becomes sensitized to a particular substance, causing your immune system to react to a harmless substance. One of these reactions is…you guessed it…inflammation. In Central Desensitization, your entire nervous system becomes reactive. It amplifies pain signals and heightens reactions.

So your allergies may be worse.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there…

There are times when Fibromyalgia sufferers may have the symptoms of seasonal allergies, without the actual seasonal allergies. The muscle tightness and pressure can also affect your NOSE. This pressure, in turn affects your sinuses, which causes the sniffles and postnasal drip.

So, what is a Fibro sufferer to do during this dreadful season?

1.) Try a Neti- Pot: Neti-pots gently flush out and soothe nasal passages with salt water.
2.) Get More Omega-3’s : These fatty acids that are found in fish, meant, and eggs reduce the body’s inflammation.
3.) Local Honey: Eating honey grown locally can work as a mini-immunization to your local pollens, causing less of an allergic reaction!
4.) DRINK WATER: Water helps your body cleanse itself and soothes inflammation.
5.) Take a Hot Shower: The steam will ease the pressure in your nasal passages, the heat will soothe your aches, and you will rinse yourself clean of pollen. Some find that showering twice a day helps with allergy symptoms.
6.) Don’t Turn off Your Humidifier- Moist air soothes nasal passages, but it also bonds with pollen so it isn’t easily inhaled.

Just be very careful with any antihistamine use. Antihistamines cause drowsiness, which can be exacerbated in people with Fibromyalgia, so you should only use them sparingly.

Unless you live in a bubble, seasonal allergies cannot be avoided. Since Fibromyalgia sufferers have heightened responses, you need to be extra vigilant about self-care.
Pamper your body with whole foods, enough sleep, and exercise.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

by Dr. Steven Yen

While Fibromyalgia is NOT “all in your head”, you may have problems that are “all in your gut.”

“Leaky Gut Syndrome” is a real issue, and may be complicating your Fibromyalgia.

What is “Leaky Gut?”

The cells of your small intestine may get damaged. These damaged cells allow molecules of undigested food and waste into your blood stream. Your body sees these molecules as “invaders” and your immune system attacks them, causing inflammation.

Symptoms of Leaky Gut Include:

-Fatigue

-Body Aches

-Fever

-Low Pain Tolerance

-Bowel Issues

-Memory Issues

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?!

Besides inflammation, “Leaky Gut Syndrome” also interferes with the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients such as magnesium.  Magnesium helps your body produce energy, helps your brain heal, and helps your nervous system fight off pain.

Also, when waste and undigested food molecules enter your blood stream, your liver must work harder to properly filter the toxins in your body.  When your body has to fight to filter toxins, it opens itself to a host of illness and pain.

What Causes Leaky Gut? full-tummy

“Leaky Gut Syndrome” is caused by an irritation to the small intestine, and, as you can imagine, the usual suspects are to blame:

-       Poor Diet: Refined sugar, flour, processed foods, food coloring, soda, artificial sweeteners excessive gran consumption (including pop-corn!), and consuming too many low-fiber foods and foods that lack Vitamin A or B6.

-       Food Allergies or Sensitivities:  Sometimes even good foods cause irritation in the bowel.  The big culprits, however, are either gluten or dairy…sometimes both!

-       Stressful and Sedentary Lifestyle:  Stress and the lack of exercise result in poor circulation. Poor circulation makes your digestive tract sluggish and more prone to irritation.

-       Nicotine: Need I say more?

Unfortunately, Antibiotics, NSAIDS, Antacids, and chemotherapy can also contribute to “Leaky Gut Syndrome.”  Which is why eliminating “ugly” foods are especially important!

How to Treat Leaky Gut

Treating “Leaky Gut Syndrome” is not an overnight process. It takes time and patience.

1.)  Increase your water intake: Being dehydrated causes bowel problems, which can cause irritation and inflammation. Drinking enough water, which should be a quart for every 50lbs of body weight every day,  can regulate you. Besides the bowel-regulating effect, water reduces inflammation and helps the body flush out toxins, taking strain off of your liver.

2.)  Eliminate Foods: After you eliminate all chemical – laden toxic foods from your diet, you may have to try an elimination diet to see if any of the healthy foods you eat are causing food intolerance.  While we all know some people are intolerant to wheat and dairy, some people may be intolerant to foods in the nightshade family (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant).  This link will give you some great tips on how to start an elimination diet: http://www.webmd.com/allergies/guide/allergies-elimination-diet.

3.)  Probiotics: These are small bacteria that are good for your body.  But please, consult with a health professional about their proper use!

4.)  Reduce Stress and Do Some Exercise:  Remember, the better the circulation, the better the body!

It may take some time, but people have seen so many of their Fibromyalgia Symptoms improve with the proper treatment of their “Leaky Gut.”
