Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia

by Dr. Steven Yen

A study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings indicates that fibromyalgia patients who attempt acupuncture found that it can remove fatigue and anxiety for upwards of seven months!  In acupuncutre a practicioner will often taken dry needles, and insert them into different points onto the body.  This dry needle will then bed itself into some of the soft tissue beneath the surface.  When the needle is twisted, or gently moved, this causes a rush of endorphins from the brain to be released into the bloodstream, causing pain relief, and relaxation from the symptoms.

Studies have shown that acupuncture actually changes the chemistry in your mind.  In other words, it changes your brain chemistry.  The way it changes this is in altering the neurotransmitters which inhabit or stimulate nerve impulses in your brain.

Using Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia can free up these blockages and allow your energy to flow once again; therefore, reducing your pain. The Chinese believe when there is pain present then there is blockage of chi, the vital energy that flows within your body from organ to organ that sustains life.

There are two schools of acupuncture. One is based on the “miracle / experience” point and the other is based on the ancient five element theories.

Miracle or experience points are acupuncture points that have been proven to relieve certain symptoms or treat specific conditions based on thousands of years of experience. It is a generic one size fits all recipe book approach that allows a doctors to be able to get trained and start treating patients in a relatively short period of time.

The five element theories approach is the more individualized approach and can change your body’s composition and improve your overall health. It is a much more complicated system and it usually takes years for a practitioner to become a professional. A traditional acupuncturist will need to perform pulse diagnosis to be able to figure out which acupuncture point or points to stimulate but a trained applied kinesiologist can also use a manual muscle to figure out the appropriate acupuncture points for proper treatment.

If you are looking for symptom relief, then the “miracle / experience points” can be very helpful, and they are also great for self treatments at home.

To improve your overall health, you should look for a competent traditional acupuncturist or Applied Kinesiologist in order to diagnose you properly :)  There are many out there that would look to take advantage of you, so make sure that you do your research, and look into the history of the doctor you are attempting to see.
